Want to Hoai Tonight?

By GILLIAN SONIN

We’ve found a hidden gem of a restaurant for you. This particular spot is so special, and so delicious, that we’ve been instructed  by regulars not write about it. So enter at your own risk – you might find someone shooting you some side eye as she waits for a table.

The place is Hoai Huong, and it’s the best Vietnamese restaurant in Montreal – possibly the best Vietnamese outside of Saigon. The spot isn’t fancy. Its glass-topped tables, laminated menus, and flat screen TVs (playing hockey games during the winter months) add to the experience and keep the prices low. An average dinner is around $12, and you’ll be more than satisfied.

The food is to die for. Amazing spring rolls filled with shrimp, scrumptious Pho with steaming broth that can cure any ailment, savory beef stir-fry’s, delicate Vietnamese pancakes, sweet lemongrass chicken, piping hot pork imperial rolls – the list seems endless. Our fave dish on the menu is the Vietnamese salad: lettuce, topped with rice noodles, topped with the best BBQ chicken you’ve ever tasted, chives, mint, and peanuts.

Once you’ve tried it, the cravings are so intense that the place has become a verb: “Wanna Hoai tonight?” And now that we’ve let you in on the secret, do us a favour, okay? Don’t tell anyone!
