If you think turtlenecks, snapping, and berets when you think “Spoken Word”, it’s about time you check out Dwayne Morgan’s When Sisters Speak series. With two shows this weekend in Toronto and Ottawa and now in its twelfth year, this event has never failed to deliver laughter, tears, intellect, empowerment, and soul.
As the largest showcase of black, female talent in Spoken Word on this continent, When Sisters Speak is a first-class display of established artists. Featuring Toronto locals Keisha Monique, Naila Keleta-Mae, Truth Is…, and Devon Jones, as well as special guests Dasha Kelly from Milwaukee and Atlanta’s Queen Sheba, these women will make you think and rethink such pertinent issues as beauty, love, war, race, consumerism, and what it really means to be a woman. For a taste of what to expect, check out some clips of these artists on the event’s Facebook Page.
Tickets range from $20 to $45, so for this weekend’s Girls’ Night Out, ditch the latest Hollywood rom-com/popcorn combo and put that money towards support for your sisters instead.
